I`ve been letting this blog fall by the wayside for the past few weeks,mainly because of a lack of time and new work,but I`ll be starting a new blog in the next week which I`ll be updating on a less sporadic basis.

For a while now,I`ve been more interested in storytelling in general,as opposed to simply comic storytelling,and the new blog will show this.

Anyway,it`ll be a proper blog instead of this honky tonk jokeshop.

Phil Barrett sent me this amazing note a few weeks back.Looking at Phil`s original art is a joy.His clean,confident brushwork puts my fecky little pen lines to shame.

I`m still stuck without a scanner but fortunately Phil scanned in the B+W art before he posted it.So,here`s the black and white version for you idiots to leer at.

He actually coloured it nice n` purty with lovely sepia/rusty tones after he scanned it but there`s no way for me to post it here.So feck yiz.

Here`s a little snippet from Waiting Room,scanned in by Phil Barrett.

€1 in SubCity and the Crow St Shop.Still not in Forbidden Planet because I`ve been too busy schoolin` for the past week.

But I`m seriously thinking about whether I should even bother,since much more of my comics sell at conventions rather than shops and even then I sell much more to women(God only knows why,must be because I`m so devilishly handsome)which,not meaning to be sexist here,isn`t really the target audience of Forbidden Planet.

Even Irish comic readers aren`t really the target audience of FP.I`ve never gone into FP with the intention of buying Irish comics(which isn`t FP`s fault at all,of course).I go in to buy American stuff because they have the best selection of comics from the U.S of A,which is fair enough.That`s how they make their money.

So,really,is it worth my while?If a sizeable number of FP`s customers are anything like me then they`ll go in to buy American comics and maybe an Irish comic with the same sensibilities as US comics("DubCity Comics"for instance.Great read,by the way)and will pass by a tiny Luke F book because it wouldn`t interest them.Which is fair enough as well.If they want to read little fecky yokes like mine they`ll go to SubCity or the shop on Crow St.

If anyone wants to add anything,leave a comment or email me or whatever.I`m interested in hearing other people`s views on this.Also,I should add this isn`t an anti-Forbidden Planet thing.I go there all the time to buy US comics and the like.I`m just debating whether it would be the best place for me to get comics sold in or not.

Knocked this out on the Wacom yesterday.I like the colours but I honestly don`t know why I felt the urge to draw a giant monster-bird in a city(?),but ah well.

It promises to be deadly but I can`t make it,one reason being that the yoke starts at 9 and the Twisted Pepper probably wouldn`t let me in because I`m still a manboy and not a manman.
Then again,they ARE letting Dec in,and he`s a ladyboy....

But I`m not going to be sitting in a pool of my salty tears tonight because Liam Geraghty is sending me one of the free comics that he and Phil Barret cooked up for the night.

Here`s a little headshot of character I was thinking of using in a kind of picture book with a twisted slant.

I`ve kinda dumped that idea because:
a)it`s harder than I thought.
b)Ronan Kennedy already beat me to it,in a way.His new picture book,"What Is It?"is feckin class and my wee "Rush Harris Adventure Book" would look depressingly crap beside it.
But,who knows,I might well find myself doing it as a comic instead of a picture book in the future.

In other news,that Summer Edition yoke this year was class.It`s where I picked up "What Is It?"(I don`t know if Ronan`s gonna sell a few copies through the comic shops or whether it was just an Edition special)as well as a few other goodies.
Although,I did get a larf a few days back when I clicked on my name in the "link" section of the Edition Arts site,and it led to the blog of another bloke called Luke F talking about his guitar!I don`t mind,though,since I put this blog address on all of my books and stuff so anyone who`s interested should find me easily enough.

Also,I`m three pages in with my new comic,Waiting Room,which should be out before the end of Summer.I know I used the name in a story in LFC#1 but that one was shite and this one has a different story.It`s what the original Waiting Room should have been.Waiting Room 2.0,if you will.

Also,I think it might well be the biggest exposure of one of my doodles...the Micks blog has about 60 followers,and I`d imagine there are a fair few people who aren`t "followers" but still check in regularly.
My blog certainly doesn`t have 60 steady readers(I`d imagine there`s about two,including me)and the most I`ve ever printed of my work is 60 copies of Tweet and I still have most of them in my room.
So,I`m pretty sure that Mooney just put my work in front of more people than I ever could`ve.

HOW DOES THAT HANDSOME DEVIL,LUKE F,CREATE A COVER?

Here`s how!

1.Fist off,I drew the character(not a thing I usually do,normally I draw the stuff farthest back first when I`m using the computer)using GIMP and the Wacom.I really like how the shirt came out.

2.Then I went into Paint(yes,Paint.I know,Iknow)and added some black spaces.You`ll see why later.

3.Back to GIMP.I turn those "black spaces" into "buildings" by drawing bricks(very loose bricks)and adding some white spaces to act as windows.

4.Back to Paint(I know,I know)to make those white spaces look somewhat like windows instead of plain white boxes.

5.Add text in GIMP.

And that`s it from start to finish.About an hour and a half`s work.
I also wanted to be a bit looser and cartoony in this piece after reading Perramus by Alberto Breccia(sent to me by Matt "D`Israeli" Brooker,along with a load of extra goodies!Cheers,Matt).

Howdy podnahs.

The 2D Festival up in Derry was feckin class as always.Got to meet up with Will Sliney(there`s a link in the coloumn over there ->) for the first time in near enough two years!If you come across a copy of Farscape anywhere,snap it up.Will is really pulling off some great stuff recently.

I managed to shift a fair few copies of "Tweet" after a slow enough start.There was a lot of interest in the aul` portfolio I had as well.I was even asked to do a few sketches which was surreal to say the least...(Didn`t even think of getting a photo of any of them cos I`m a plank)

I also got to catch up a bit with Matt Brooker(AKA,D`Israeli).He`s sending me some fantastic comics by Alberto Breccia and I can`t wait to get my grubby little hands on them!
Also,I was sitting next to comics legend Bryan Talbot!

In other news,I assume everyone has heard by now that Bob Byrne is fecking off to Spain for the foreseeable future?Fair play to him I suppose...
...the lucky bastard.

Anyhoo,I`m hoping to have some stickers of the "Love comics.Hate racism" design done for this yoke on the 4th of July in Temple Bar.

Also,I drew the other piece here as a panel for a new comic which should be out soon.That is,if the story I had laid out wasn`t EXACTLY like Last Bus by Paddy Lynch!So that`s been scrapped,but I have a fair few ideas rattling around in the aul` brain box...

Speaking of Paddy Lynch,I stumbled upon him,Phil Barret,Katie Blackwood,Ronan Kennedy and Bobby Byrne himself eating couscous and playing Scrabble at the Black Market in the Seomra Spraoi last Sunday.Business seemed to be steady enough and there was plenty of interested folk having a gawk at the goods.

It`s always great to see comics getting into the hands of people who wouldn`t normally go into comic shops or conventions.Also Paddy,Phil and Katie are getting a small press yoke in Temple Bar together for July.It sounds pretty class.

I knocked out the new header in 15 mins with the Wacom.Wasn`t really all that happy with the old one.

Anyhoo,I`ve another comic in the works right now.It`s only a little yoke like Luke F Comics #1 (but MUCH MUCH better than LFC#1,in that it`s not,y`know completely shit...)and I`m hoping to have it ready to go for the 2D Festival in Derry this June.

Also,I`ve been messing around with using monsters and such in illustrations.It`s my own lazy fallback for illos:If you want the reader to instantly get that someone(or something)is a horrible prick,all you have to do is caricturise them as monsters or hideous.Newspaper cartoons used to do it all the time when talking about politicians and the like.

Just look at this post`s illustration to catch my drift(it`s about that sham of a budget,if you live in a cave).

Why does the fact Palestine is being bombed by Israel give people the go-ahead for all sorts of Anti-Semetic nonsense?It`s impossible to go anywhere without hearing something that could have been lifted from the "Protocols of The Elders of Zion".

I have no love for Israel,but it`s not the average jew firing rockets at schools,it`s the filth in command.

And I can`t stand that Hamas are now being seen as some kind of freedom-fighters.They`re

homophobic,sexist anti-semitist fundamentallist bigots(and I don`t mean the average Palestinian when I say that,by the way)

REMEMBER ALEXANDROS!

I try to keep politics out of my comics and blog as much as I can but this story really made me angry beyond words.

In Greece this month,police shot an unarmed 15 year old boy called Alexandros Grigoropoulos down in the street.Riots have been raging in Greece and around the world since with the occupation of schools and TV stations by ordinary people and students angered by the murder of a youth by police.

There was a demonstration in town on Saturday that I was at with the sign I made(that I`m holding in the picture)which reads "Remember Alexandros.Stop State Killing!".

And sad to say,this is not an isolated incident.

In Ireland alone there`s a long list of people who`ve died in Garda custody (The mysterious death of Terence Wheelock being the most controversial in recent years) which when coupled with the shocking brutality on display daily in Rossport by the Gardaí doesn`t paint a happy picture of the "protectors of the people"...

Here`s a piece I did while listening to Phil Och`s "I Ain`t Marching Anymore" .
Do yourself a favour and check out some of his stuff (it`s hard to find,so youtube is your best bet).

He was a great folksinger who wrote some really fantastic protest songs and sadly killed himself in the seventies and most of his songs then fell into obscurity for the most part.It`s one of the great tragidies of music since some of his songs were true gems.

Anyway,I`ll be doing a few pieces like this using the work of some singers I really admire like Luke Kelly,Pete Seeger,Ewan MacColl etc.

I`ve been working like a motherlicker recently but my scanner is fecked and I just got a new computer so I haven`t really had time to anything with the wacom....

Anyway the Dublin City Comic con yoke was a blast.sad to see a serious lack of young folk walking around,though.Especially since I only really started developing as an "awtist" when I went to cons and got some sound advice from some of the Irish lads and I`d hate for that to become a thing of the past since comics really need new blood to survive.
On that side of things the 2D Festival in Derry really deserves big respect.The atmosphere is fantastic and it`s great to see the varying types of people wandering in.

And also,if you have any sense at all you`d pick up "Tim Skinner:Total Scumbag" by Andy Winter and Declan Shalvey.I had tears of laughter running down my cheeks while reading this.
And the lovely full colour artwork doesn`t hurt either.

BIZARRO!

Here`s a "little sketch" that ended up taking a verrrry long time.

it was originally just a pencil sketch I do to loosen up a bit before I draw but then I really started to like the whole "confused simpleton"vibe coming off it and turned it into a Bizarro.I really love the way some mainstream characters like Bizarro work best when a more"independant comics" approach is taken rather than the usual non-identifiable mush that fills (mainly DC,I have to say)comics on the shelves now...

Funny thing is,I`ve been busting a nut trying to draw a good Bizarro for about a week now,and I only really cracked it by mistake!Ah well,them`s the breaks...

anyhoo,all done with a flexible brushpen,big Pentel marker thingie and red marker.

I inked it with the wacom(I didn`t think I was going to be inking it so I went pretty tight with the pencils,so it only took about 10 minutes at most with the wacom.)

I`m really sorry for all the artless posts of late,but I`ve been working really hard on a new project that will probably take me a few years realistically because of school and also because if I do it as it is in my head it`ll be a bigass book...
I won`t say what it`s about yet,but it`ll be a really affecting piece if I get it across right,especially if you live in the same kind of area I do.

Also,if you have TG4 you should be checking out "Daithí O Sé Ar Route 61".
I know what most people are thinking when they hear TG4,a bunch of sour old boggers sitting around playing the accordian and maybe some hilariously bad dubbing jobs(hide your face in shame,SpongeBob)but this show is really fantastic.It`s like Louis Thearoux with a bit of Irish wit.It replays on Saturday nights at 11.15 and I think there`s a new one every Wedensday(maybe Monday,I`m really not too certain)at 9.00pm.

I had a busy weekend starting with friday when I got to talk to Marty Whelan(yer man with the moustache on RTÉ...http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42886000/jpg/_42886573_marty_whelan.jpg )as he was opening or hosting something or other at my local Supervalue.

Then on saturday Declan Shalvey was sketching at Liffey Valley so I went up and saw the Batman film as well.And finally on the sunday went to the Kings of Concrete thing in town.I was wrecked!

Did some more stuff on my wacom like re-doing the batman/twoface pic from aaaages ago.And drawing a simpleton,as you can see above,because I wasn`t bothered to do alot of physical ink-on-paper drawing.although I did do another page of "waiting room",the cover and an unrelated pin-up by hand within the last week,so I happy enough.

Speaking of simpletons did anyone see that moron of a ref at the Drogheda vs Dynamo Kiev game?Kiev were diving all around the place in the first half and the ref kept giving them free kicks.it was because of one of those free kicks that Dynamo got their first goal!I`m not the biggest Drogheda fan(I`m a St.Pats supporter)but when an Irish team is playing for Europe I`d support any club.Except Shamrock Rovers.They`re bastards.

well anyhoo,I hope the fact Dynamo Kiev(one of the top teams in the world) only slenderly(2-1) won against an Irish eircom league team shuts up all the wankers in this country that support English clubs because "the quality isn`t good enough in Ireland".There are teams all around Ireland being bankrupted because some people would rather watch some wanker like Ronaldo rather than seeing some top-class Irish players like Keith Fahey and Joe Gamble,of the top of my head.I mean it`s all well and good supporting English teams if you want,but at least try and support your local team.Except Shamrock Rovers.They`re bastards.

I got some new pens and inks about a week ago,and I tried to do something loose and experimental with them and I came up with this incredibly crap and tame piece...who`d a thunk it?

I cleaned it up for a B+W version I did by feckin around with it in photoshop but I thought I`d put up the original dirty one because there`s a chance the clean one might be used in a comics zine,so I didn`t want to put it up here because if it comes out I want you to buy it!

I have the wacom for about three months or something now,but I`ve only really been using it as a way to plot out pages and to touch up photo`s so there was nothing really to show up until now.

Here`s a little bit I did with the Wacom Bamboo as a backdrop to the text.I love just doing stuff like this where there`s no real reason for doing it.It`s really nice to be able to go through the fonts and stuff you have and to see them in practical use without the burden of having to size it out to be photocopied or whatever.Like sometimes I just draw a comic for the sake of drawing one,which really gives you more room to be as sketchy and loose as you like.

And also I got a dvd of the infamous unreleased Fantastic Four film from the nineties in the post today.I`ve always been interested in those "dodgy science and dodgier special effects"

films,but throw in the fact that it`s an unreleased superhero movie and I`m sold!well anyway it follows the basic plot of the 2005 one but there`s a kind of Moleman character in there as well,and funnily enough,I think the nineties one got the feeling of Dr.Doom way better than the new one ...

It`s hilariously shit but I`ve been looking for it ever since I heard about it a year or so ago,so it`s a fanboy dream fulfilled for me.

Well here`s a little piece I did just to get back into the feel of using inks again.I`m especially liking throwing red into a b+w pic as I think it adds that little something to it.Also I like the imagery of boxing and boxers.I`d like to do a little comic about the sport.There`s loads of ideas I can think of for such a comic but at the moment I`m swaying towards a comic with a few small stories in it I could call "Boxer Shorts".Classy.

I was up in Derry on saturday for the 2d festival.It`s a lovely city and the festival was the bee`s knee`s!Dec was knocking out batmans like they were going out of fashion and he also did one of the best Marv`s I`ve ever seen.Second only to Miller`s.

I drew this as a rough version of the cover for the aforementioned kraken comic.

This is a very very rough version that took me about three minutes in all.

I like the way this turned out and I think it suits the feel of the comic down to the ground.I`ll post more as I do `em.

24 hour comic day was deadly.i didn`t stay for the full 24 hours but i got the whole comic finished in 6 or 7 hours or something like that(cos i`m brilliant)

had a great time and would reccomend it to everyone.a fun relaxed atmosphere and mainly,twas a bit of craic.

got talkin to bob byrne for the last half hour to hour,exchanging jokes such as the infamous "choccie biccie"and the like.

i went with a fellow called paul from my class(the one that drew the filthy pic of dec at subcon)who`s comic was class.

and a big shoutout and thanks to Cliodhna for setting it all up.Cheers,Cliodhna!
